The 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade AWD can be a fantastic daily driver.

The Toyota Camry has come a long way over the years. What was once viewed as a simple commuter sedan has evolved into something far more refined, stylish, and enjoyable to drive. Even with countless SUVs dominating the roads today, the Camry continues proving why it remains one of America’s most trusted and dependable cars.

After spending time behind the wheel of the 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade AWD, it became clear why this sedan continues thriving. It delivers comfort, reliability, efficiency, and enough style to stand out without trying too hard. While the Nightshade package itself did not completely win me over, the overall vehicle still impressed in several important ways.

The Supersonic Red paint especially gave this Camry serious personality. Combined with the blacked-out trim pieces and aggressive wheels, the car definitely turns heads. It is arguably one of the best-looking trims in Toyota’s new Camry lineup.

What Makes the Nightshade Different?

The Nightshade trim is essentially a cosmetic enhancement package built on the Camry SE. It adds gloss-black exterior accents, black badging, black rocker appliques, and 19-inch satin black alloy wheels for a darker, sportier appearance.

Compared to the standard SE, the Nightshade certainly looks more aggressive. However, buyers should know this package is mostly a visual upgrade over the SE Upgrade Package.

That matters because this particular test vehicle carried a total sticker price of $38,519.  For me, that is where things become a little difficult to justify. If saving money matters, I would honestly skip the Nightshade package and go with a standard SE trim instead.

Still, there is no denying the styling works. The red exterior with the dark accents creates a sharp combination that gives the Camry a much-needed edge.

Hybrid Power Meets Excellent Fuel Economy

Under the hood, the 2026 Camry Nightshade AWD features Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system paired with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing up to 232 combined horsepower.

The powertrain feels smooth and responsive for daily driving. No, this is not a sports sedan, but it has enough energy to make highway merges and passing comfortable. The Camry also includes Eco, Normal, Sport, and EV drive modes.

Sport mode noticeably sharpens the driving feel and makes the car more engaging. Meanwhile, the EV mode feels somewhat pointless. I honestly wish Toyota would allow more real-world EV-only driving because it could make a huge difference during city commutes and parking lot driving.

Fuel economy remains one of the Camry’s strongest weapons. Toyota estimates up to 46 MPG combined on the AWD Nightshade.  Even with my admittedly heavy foot, I still averaged around 37 MPG during testing, and I walked away very happy with those numbers.

A Comfortable Road Trip Companion

The Camry Nightshade might market itself as sporty, but this sedan shines brightest as a commuter and road-trip vehicle.

I took the Camry on a drive to College Station, and the experience was incredibly enjoyable. The ride remained composed for long highway stretches while still feeling planted and controlled around corners. Toyota’s sport-tuned suspension adds a firmer feel compared to the standard Camry, but it never becomes harsh or uncomfortable.

The cabin also offers plenty of room for passengers in both rows. Adults can comfortably stretch out in the front and back seats, making this an easy recommendation for families or frequent travelers.

Cargo space also deserves praise. The trunk easily swallowed luggage, camera gear, and coolers without issue. Toyota says the trunk can hold seven carry-on suitcases, while folding the rear seats expands capacity to fit up to 19 carry-ons. That flexibility makes the Camry surprisingly practical for tailgates, road trips, and weekend adventures.

Toyota Keeps Physical Controls Alive

One of the best things about the Camry is Toyota’s refusal to bury every feature inside a touchscreen.

The Nightshade includes a digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.  Better yet, Toyota still gives drivers physical controls where they matter most.

The volume knob stays, and the climate controls use actual buttons, but I could not find a way to get the A/C to be automatic on with the car. Steering wheel functions remain straightforward and tactile. That might sound simple, but in today’s overly digital automotive world, it makes a huge difference.

That said, I do wish the infotainment screen were larger. The system works fine, but visually it feels smaller compared to competitors. I also found Toyota’s lane assist and steering intervention settings frustrating to adjust. Honestly, my impatience probably played a role because I did not want to dig through the manual, but the system should still be easier to disable quickly.

Interior Comfort Falls Slightly Short

While the Camry excels in many areas, the interior left me somewhat mixed.

The cabin feels functional and spacious, but also a bit bland visually. I wanted more personality inside, especially considering how sharp the exterior looks. The seats also were not as comfortable as I expected during extended driving.

I additionally noticed an odd cracking noise coming from the back of my seat during portions of the drive. It was not enough to ruin the experience, but it definitely stood out.

Still, none of those complaints overshadow the Camry’s strengths. Toyota continues building vehicles people can genuinely depend on for years, and the Camry remains one of the safest bets in the sedan market.

Verdict

The 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade AWD proves the Camry formula still works. It combines reliability, hybrid efficiency, practicality, and attractive styling into a package that makes everyday driving easy and enjoyable.

The Nightshade package itself feels more cosmetic than necessary, especially at this price point, but the overall vehicle remains an excellent commuter and road-trip companion. If you want a stylish hybrid sedan with strong MPG and Toyota dependability, the Camry continues delivering exactly what buyers expect.
